Chevrolet’s Fuel-efficient and Advanced Tech Vehicles are Center Stage at 2009 Washington Auto Show
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Fuel efficiency reigns at the 2009 Washington Auto Show with General Motors’ display of newly introduced cars and crossovers, led by its foundational brand, Chevrolet. The lineup demonstrates GM’s commitment to building fuel-efficient vehicles using advanced propulsion technologies, all with a continued focus on design, quality and value that exceed customer expectations.
Making its Washington, D.C. debut, the 2010 Chevy Equinox delivers expected segment-leading highway fuel economy and is joined by the Chevrolet Orlando show car, a compact, multi-purpose vehicle. Joining Equinox and Orlando is the Chevrolet Beat concept. The Beat is the precursor to the recently announced Chevrolet Spark, a highly fuel-efficient mini-car. Chevrolet announced at last month’s North American International Auto Show that Orlando and Spark will be produced for the global marketplace.
Other Chevrolets on display include the production version of the Voltec-powered Chevrolet Volt extended-range electric vehicle; the Chevrolet Malibu, 2008 North American Car of the Year; the upcoming 2011 Chevrolet Cruze, expected to achieve nearly 40 mpg on the highway; the fuel-efficient Chevrolet Aveo5; the Chevrolet Equinox Fuel Cell vehicle; and the much-anticipated 2010 Chevrolet Camaro.
“We’re reinventing what drives America and the world,” said Ed Peper, GM North American Vice President, Chevrolet. “The dramatic shift to more fuel-efficient and alternative propulsion technologies can be seen here today in our nation’s capital with current offerings like the Chevy Malibu and Aveo5 already in the marketplace, and a preview of the small cars and crossovers coming to dealers soon.”
The future of luxury driving is also represented by the Cadillac Converj concept. GM’s Voltec electric propulsion technology enables this well-appointed grand touring coupe the game-changing, extended-range electric vehicle driving capability first introduced in the Chevy Volt concept.
Here is a brand-by-brand look at the fuel-efficient, alternative fuel and advanced technology vehicles shown in Washington.
Chevrolet
2010 Chevrolet Equinox: When equipped with GM’s all-new 2.4L four-cylinder direct injection engine – one of two all-new engine choices – Equinox is expected to lead the segment in highway fuel economy, beating both the Toyota RAV-4 and Honda CR-V. The 2.4L-equipped five-seat crossover, filled with unexpected amenities for the price and influenced by the popular Malibu sedan and midsize Traverse crossover, achieves an estimated 30 mpg highway.
Chevrolet Beat: The Beat two-door mini-car concept combines youthful exterior and interior design with outstanding fuel economy. After sweeping the global auto show circuit, the Beat inspired the Chevy Spark, which will be sold in several markets around the world starting in 2010. The Spark hits the U.S. in 2011.
Chevrolet Orlando show car: The Orlando is a compact, seven-seat multi-purpose vehicle based on the recently introduced Cruze compact sedan. Equipped with a fuel-efficient, four-cylinder engine, Orlando offers the versatile attributes of a sport-utility, family van and wagon. Like the Spark, the Orlando production vehicle debuts in U.S. markets in 2011.
Chevrolet Equinox Fuel Cell: This electric vehicle powered by a hydrogen fuel cell uses zero gas, and emits only water vapor. The Chevrolet Equinox Fuel Cell is an integral part of Chevy’s Project Driveway, an innovative market test that puts these vehicles into the hands of drivers to gain real-world experience and learning. The program began in October 2007 and will run through 2010. More than 3,500 people have driven the fuel cell Equinox; either in short drives at media programs or special events, or as part of longer loan. More than 500,000 miles of fuel cell driving have been logged since the start of the market test, and it is estimated that fuel cell drivers have saved approximately 25,000 gallons of gasoline during the program.
Cadillac
Cadillac Converj concept: The Cadillac Converj concept was developed as a well-appointed grand touring coupe with a bold design and a host of interactive technology. The four-passenger Converj is intended to show how GM’s revolutionary Voltec electric propulsion technology can power a luxury coupe with a typically Cadillac “no compromises” design. It enables up to 40 miles of gas- and emissions-free electric driving with extended-range capability of hundreds of miles.
Buick
2010 Buick LaCrosse: The completely redesigned 2010 Buick LaCrosse luxury sedan builds on the success of the popular Enclave crossover and continues Buick’s renaissance. LaCrosse offers all-wheel drive, a suite of advanced intelligent personal technologies and safety features, and a choice of two fuel-saving V-6 engines. The exterior design builds on the Buick Invicta show car introduced at the 2008 Beijing Auto Show.
Saab
Saab 9-5 Griffin: Available in four-door Sedan as well as five-door SportCombi models, all versions of the all-new, luxurious 9-5 Griffin include Saab’s signature 2.3L, 260-horsepower (194 kW) four-cylinder engine and can be matched to five-speed manual or automatic transmissions.
