BMW Group Canada Announces Premieres for Canadian International Autoshow.

Whitby – BMW Group Canada will premiere the BMW Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid and the Z4 Roadster at the Canadian International Autoshow Press Day on February 11, 2009 in Toronto.
Continuing the legacy of BMW performance roadsters, the new BMW Z4 will be available in Canada in spring with two engine models, the Z4 sDrive30i and the Z4 sDrive35i. The new roadsters offer enhanced performance, optimized efficiency and a new level of exterior and interior refinement. The Z4 is debuting with a new feature; it is the first BMW roadster equipped with a retractable hardtop. The two-piece hardtop fully retracts electrohydraulically within 20 seconds, allowing the driver to easily experience both the exhilaration of a convertible and the comfort of a sport coupé.

The BMW Z4 sDrive30i comes equipped with an in-line six-cylinder gasoline engine. With a max torque of 220lb-ft and 225 horsepower, this roadster accelerates from 0-100km/h in 5.9 seconds. While the six-speed manual transmission as standard, the sDrive30i is available with a six-speed automatic transmission with optimized gearshift dynamics.

The BMW Z4 sDrive35i is also driven by an in-line six-cylinder gasoline engine, however also has Twin Turbo and direct fuel injection, allowing a max torque of 300lb-ft and 300 horsepower. The acceleration from 0-100km/h in the sDrive35i is 5.3 seconds. In addition to the standard six speed manual transmission, a seven-speed Double Clutch Transmission (DCT) is also available as an option, along with an automatic transmission.

The design of the new Z4 takes on the look of a classic roadster using modern, flowing lines. As the only car in its segment offering classic roadster proportions, even with the roof fully closed, the new BMW Z4 is slightly larger outside than its predecessor, at the same time offering more comfort in terms of passenger and loading space. The low seating position near the rear axle, along with rear-wheel drive guarantees the driving experience typical of a BMW Roadster.

The BMW Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid is for the first time showcasing BMW ActiveHybrid technology in a luxury sedan. Following the BMW EfficientDynamics philosophy, this new Concept Car combines a significant reduction in fuel consumption and emissions with a standard of driving dynamics never seen before in a hybrid car. The drivetrain technology reduces fuel consumption and emissions by 15% (EU test cycle) versus a similar car running on a combustion engine only.

The BMW Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid is powered by the V8 gasoline engine with Twin Turbo and High Precision Injection based on the power unit of the BMW 750i. Maximum output of the conventional engine in the regular production model is 400 hp, with peak torque of 450 lb-ft. Now this exceptional engine is combined with an electric motor fully integrated in the transmission housing, developing maximum output of 20 hp and peak torque of 155 lb-ft (European specifications). With the mild hybrid concept, the electric motor boosts the dynamic driving potential of the eight-cylinder gasoline engine in a unique manner most appropriate for the character of the BMW 7 Series, giving the car even more dynamic acceleration.

Using Brake Energy Regeneration, the electric motor supplies power to a high-performance lithium-ion battery integrated in the luggage compartment. The electric energy generated is supplied to the power-consuming items on board the car, minimising the direct conversion of fuel into electric energy and maximising the power available for driving dynamics.

The BMW Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid is based on the BMW 7 Series luxury sedan. BMW will introduce the 5th generation of its flagship sedan in spring 2009. This vehicle demonstrates how supreme luxury can be harmonized with dynamic performance. The BMW 7 Series will arrive in Canada in 750i and 750Li variants – the Li version with its wheelbase extended by 140 mm.

Both models will be powered by an all-new twin-turbo V-8 engine. The 4.4-liter, twin-turbocharged V-8 delivers 400 hp and a robust 450 lb-ft. of torque over the even broader range of 1750-4500 rpm. Reflecting BMW Efficient Dynamics principles, fuel efficiency also promises to be class-leading too.

The sleek and sophisticated new exterior profile of the new 7 Series was designed by Canadian designer Karim Habib. A Montreal native, Habib is Team Leader, Advanced Design for BMW in Munich, Germany. Habib can be credited for blending the dynamic presence and elegance in the new vehicle’s redesign.

New to BMW in North America is BMW’s Advanced Diesel with BluePerformance, launching in December 2008 in the form of the BMW 335d and X5 xDrive35d. These vehicles will both feature a 3.0-litre straight-six diesel engine with Variable Twin Turbo Technology and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) combustion management system with urea injection.

With a maximum output of 265 hp and peak torque of an astonishing 425 lb-ft., the 3.0-liter six with Advanced Diesel with BluePerformance will not only provide sports-car-like acceleration and driveability, but offer up a whole new level of fuel efficiency and emission reduction in both models.

Performance figures for the BMW 335d indicate a potent acceleration capability of 6.2 seconds to achieve 0-100 km/h. The tenacious performance of the BMW 335d is complemented by an unprecedented combined fuel economy rating of 7.1 litres per 100 km, an advantage of 30% over the gasoline-engined variant.

The BMW X5 xDrive35d shows similarly sporting performance with a 0-100 km/h time of 7.2 seconds. This exhilarating diesel Sports Activity Vehicle performance is accompanied by a particularly thrifty combined fuel consumption rating of 9.3 litres per 100, an improvement of some 20%, respectively, over the gasoline-engined X5 xDrive30i.
