Best Hypermilers From Across America Compete in MPG Challenge
Top Drivers Achieve over 100 MPG

Madison, WI-Today at Hybridfest 2008, the nation’s largest hybrid car festival, 36 drivers competed in the third annual Hybridfest MPG Challenge, with the top drivers achieving over 100 miles per gallon (MPG), over a 26-mile open course. Novice to expert hypermilers competed to achieve maximum fuel efficiency. Each driver’s goal was to achieve the best percentage over the EPA’s estimates for their vehicle, within their division.
Hybridfest congratulates these highly skilled drivers for pushing the envelope of fuel efficiency, and showing that through driving habits alone, it is possible for anyone to slash gasoline usage and global warming emissions, no matter what car they drive.The winners in the 7 divisions:
Division 1 (Honda Insight)
William Kinney of Kennewick, WA, 109 MPG, (109% over EPA estimate) driving a 2002 Honda Insight.

Division 2 (’04-’08 Toyota Prius)
Jerad Parish of Madison, WI, 99 MPG (115% over EPA estimate) driving a 2005 Toyota Prius.

Division 3 (Civic Hybrid, ’00-’03 Toyota Prius)
Wayne Gerdes of Wadsworth, IL, 73 MPG (74% over EPA estimate) driving a 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid.

Division 4 (Toyota Camry Hybrid, Honda Accord Hybrid, Nissan Altima Hybrid, Lexus GS 450h, Lexus LS 600h L)
Rob Colucci of Shorewood, IL, 53 MPG (57% over EPA estimate) driving a 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid.

Division 5 (Chevy Malibu Hybrid, Mercury Mariner Hybrid, Ford Escape Hybrid, Mazda Tribute Hybrid, Toyota
Highlander Hybrid, Lexus RX 400h, Saturn Aura Hybrid, Saturn VUE Green Line Hybrid)
Richard Krueger of Warren, MI, 44 MPG (61% over EPA estimate) driving a 2006 Ford Escape Hybrid.

Division 6 (Chevy Silverado Hybrid, Chevy Tahoe Hybrid, GMC Yukon Hybrid)
Richard Krueger or Warren, MI, 28 MPG (33% over EPA estimate) driving a 2008 Chevy Tahoe Hybrid.

Division 7 (Non-hybrid vehicles)
Mike Sefton of Winnipeg, Manitoba, 82 MPG (81% over EPA estimate) driving a 2001 Volkswagen Golf TDI.
